Third Grade

Jillian Wallace

Prior to the Mountain Community School I worked in several schools in South Carolina as a special education teacher. Lucky for me my teaching journey has led me to the Mountain Community School. I have loved working here for close to a decade now. We are able to see each child for who they are and help them be the best version of themselves. I also have enjoyed the community atmosphere and getting to know the families over the years. I can truly say I currently have my dream job!

Classroom FAQ

We follow the common core 3rd grade standards for math and ELA. We use the state standards for science and social studies.

Homework is collected daily, and is accounted for 5 points, based on effort and errors. Math homework is usually assigned daily with the exception of the weekends. Students are given 5 words weekly containing a common prefix or suffix. They are tested on both the vocabulary and spelling of these words on Fridays. Students can use our spellingcity.com account to study these words throughout the week.

I use positive reinforcement! Students receive Wallace bucks for positive acts of behavior. They can then use these Wallace bucks to buy things at the class store which is open on Fridays. We also do high five Fridays. This is where several children are acknowledged in front of their peers for displaying appropriate behavior. All members of the class high five them and then their handprint joins the high five wall with their name on it. Students also create weekly character goals which are self-evaluated on high five Fridays.

Our first expedition will be based around the Cherokee tribe. We will emerge ourselves in the culture, values, and traditions of the Cherokee. We will even take a field trip to the Cherokee nation.
