Jessica Arriaga

Fifth Grade

Jessica Arriaga

While I was not born in North Carolina, I was raised in Henderson County, NC. My family
moved with the seasons, but settled here when I started school. I learned some of my most
valuable lessons about people and interactions while on the road or in the fields. As parents, my
husband and I were looking for a place we knew would care for our daughter to a similar degree
as she was cared for at home. We could tell TMCS would be a good fit when we visited an
Open House and met the staff. It was obvious that she would be exposed to many different
parts of the community while also completing academic goals. I spent most of my daughter’s
Kindergarten year volunteering around TMCS campus and when a staff change created a need,
I was asked to join the team, part time. SInce then, I have been dedicated to the mission of
TMCS and am rewarded daily with new experiences as an assistant, Sunset after care director,
interventionist, and, finally, teacher.

One thing that is really important to me is diversity. In my classroom, we celebrate
diversity every day; from religious beliefs to cultural differences. In my CREW, we “travel” to
different continents and hear stories, try foods, and even play games from those places. I focus
on fair and equitable treatment of everyone in the classroom as well as throughout the building.
My goal is to make sure everyone has the same chance at a quality education, regardless of
background.

My favorite subjects have always been math and science, but I have found I am very
confident in my ability to relate math topics to real world situations. I enjoy applying the math the
students are learning to their interests. At TMCS, I have spent numerous hours tutoring, offering
math intervention, and helping out in math classes up to the eighth grade math level.

My time at Mountain Community School has evolved continuously. My experiences
range from a volunteer to teacher’s assistant, to interventionist and now to teacher. I look
forward to continuing my journey and adding to my classroom experience.
